Harmac Pacific's Commitment to the Environment

At Harmac Pacific, we’re dedicated to protecting our environment while working closely with local regulatory agencies. Here’s how we’re making a difference:

Investing in a Cleaner Future

Over the past 20 years, we’ve invested more than $177 million in advanced environmental control equipment. This commitment has led to a dramatic reduction in emissions to air, water, and land. We are also committed to continuously reducing our carbon footprint through carbon reduction projects with CleanBC (CIIP). Furthermore, we partner with a variety of industry groups, including the BC Bio alliance, to develop a bioproducts based economy and help shift the industry towards a low carbon future.  The vast majority of energy produced onsite is green energy from burning waste forestry residuals or waste biomass. Excess green energy is supplied to the grid—enough to supply power to over 20,000 homes. Recently installed state-of-the-art biomass presses will reduce our reliance on Natural Gas and further reduce our carbon emissions.

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE READINESS

Our environmental emergency response planning follows Part 8 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act to ensure we’re ready for any potential incidents. Our focus is on Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) and Propane—two substances we monitor closely.

Here’s what we do to keep everyone safe:

Preparedness:

We have trained emergency response personnel ready to manage significant releases.

Communication:

We maintain and practice procedures to promptly notify emergency response agencies and inform our neighbors—both residential and business.

Containment:

In 2019, we installed a top-of-the-line Chlorine Dioxide containment and vapor suppression system to prevent large-scale releases.

If you have questions or need more information, please Contact us and ask for our Safety or Environmental department.
